Why did you decide to study in France?

When I decided to leave the practice of law and to attend culinary school, I wanted my new adventure to not only allow me to learn about food in one of the primary gastronomic centers of the world, but also to include the challenge and the experience of living in another country. Learning a new language, and experiencing a new culture, has enriched me far beyond simply learning the techniques and skills of a new craft.  It is the type of experience that allows someone to grow as a person, not just as an aspiring chef. Finally, my family emigrated from France to the United States, so it has been exciting to develop a deeper connection to my family history and my roots in France.

How has your experience in France contributed to your personal and professional goals?

Personally, studying and living abroad has encouraged me to take manageable risks and to more consistently push myself beyond my comfort zone. It has also been a delight to experience a new culture. Professionally, France is an incredibly exciting place to learn about agriculture, food, and cooking. I feel that the training I have received here will surely benefit me all my career.

Can you tell us a little anecdote or memory of your stay in France?

One of my most cherished memories of my time in France will be the day I got to spend walking on a farm on the outskirts of Paris that was previously owned and worked by my great, great, great, great, great grandfather and grandmother. Even though I could have traveled there without studying or living in France, combining these experiences has made it all the more meaningful.

In one sentence, for you, what was unique about your experience studying in France?

Studying in France has been a unique experience for me because it has allowed me to learn classical culinary techniques from a host of supremely talented chefs, using products of remarkable quality, while at the same time pushing myself to grow personally.
