Still so much to explore in Lyon
English major Tyra Ericson studied abroad at the Université Catholique de Lyon in spring 2020 as a student at Gustavus Adolphus College.
What made you choose to study in France?
I chose to study in France because I knew that I wanted to study in Europe, and I had studied French in school for 5 years. I knew I wanted to be somewhere other than Paris, and Lyon became the best decision I could have made. It had everything you could want in a city, and so much I still have yet to explore.
What surprised you most about France?
I was most surprised at how subtly beautiful it was. The sunrise while walking to school, the old town buildings, the cobblestone streets, the fashion, the culture of school and social interaction. I was also surprised at how much my language skills improved (after taking 2 years off from formal French instruction) just listening to people talk on the streets, on busses, in restaurants, etc.
What was your favorite memory or time spent in Lyon?
A group of my program friends made it a point to cross off as many coffee shops, breakfast/brunch places as we could. We would meet once a week or on weekends to get some coffees, croissants, or crepes, and study/plan trips together. As simple as this was, it got us out to different areas of the city, practicing our french, and getting together.
Any advice for future students in France after COVID-19 or hopeful messages to share?
Do not take any time for granted. Take every opportunity. Don't be afraid to reach out, meet new people, but also spend time alone in your new environment.
